Comprehensive Metabolic Panel: Adding the LFTs to the BMP

The CMP reveals far more than the BMP alone – especially when it comes to liver health. Learn how to connect AST, ALT, bilirubin, and protein levels with early signs of dysfunction, and recognize complications like jaundice, ascites, and hepatic encephalopathy before they spiral into emergencies.

  • LFTs: Exploring the liver and detecting initial changes
  • AST/ALT/ALP/Total bilirubin/proteins
  • Shall we add transaminase?
  • Health issues and symptom management in severe liver failure
    • Jaundice
    • Ascites
    • Hepatic encephalopathy
    • Coagulopathies

CBC with Differential: Interpreting the Components

Your CBC holds powerful insights into infection, anemia, and immune response – but only if you know how to interpret it. Discover what shifts in WBCs really mean, how to spot “a shift to the left,” and the latest transfusion guidelines so you can respond quickly and confidently.

  • What can impact WBC’s and neutrophil findings
  • Anemias/polycythemia
  • Understanding the differential
  • The “Shift to the Left” explained
  • Guidelines on transfusing currently
  • Exploring those blood products

Cardiac Labs: Ischemia vs. Myocardial Infarction

When every minute counts, cardiac labs and EKG findings provide the critical evidence you need. Learn how to interpret troponins, distinguish a STEMI from an NSTEMI, and use BNPs to assess cardiac strain so you can act fast and save lives.

  • Troponin I and Troponin Delta’s
  • EKG Signals: What am I seeing?
  • Distinguishing a STEMI vs. NSTEMI
  • Another cardiac lab: BNP vs Pro-BNP

Coagulation/Thrombotic Risk Panels: Clues to Clotting

From anticoagulation monitoring to identifying life-threatening disorders, coagulation panels are essential in critical care. Understand PT, INR, aPTT, fibrinogen, and D-dimer results, and know when to use reversal agents or recognize a developing DIC.

  • The Clotting Cascade
  • Selecting the correct lab test for different medications
  • aPTT
  • PT
  • INR
  • 10a
  • Fibrinogen
  • D-dimer
  • Anticoagulants and reversal agents
  • Disseminated Intravascular Coagulopathy (DIC) and DIC panels

Urinalysis is one of the simplest and most widely ordered tests, yet often overlooked in its value. Learn how to interpret UAs across different populations and apply the latest guidelines to detect UTIs with precision.

  • Current guidelines
  • UA’s
  • Clues to a UA typically depend on the patient population

Blood Gases: Identifying the Underlying Abnormality

Blood gases can feel intimidating – but they don’t have to. Learn how to choose the right test (arterial, venous, mixed venous) and use a straightforward tool to interpret ABGs with confidence in any setting.

  • Three types of blood gases: Choosing the right test for the right result
    • Arterial, venous, mixed Venous
  • Interpreting arterial blood gases: It’s easier than you think using a simple tool!

Getting Blood Cultures Right the First Time

Proper culture technique and interpretation are vital to avoid false results and guide treatment. From central line draws to gram stains and sensitivities, discover best practices that save time and prevent missteps.
